ARE WE WITNESSING THE DEATH OF QUALITY PERSONALIZED SERVICE IN THE FORMAL WEAR INDUSTRY?

 "Times They Are A-Changin" sang Bob Dylan in his 1964 hit song and the same is true of the formal wear industry.  When I started in the formal wear industry back in the 1990's we took great pride in offering each individual customer the service and attention he or she deserved.  This quality personalized service included patience to help customers select, try on, and fit their perfect formal look.  In those days if you needed to buy or rent a tuxedo you would walk in to a tuxedo store, because they had the best selection, they were experts in their field and you could sample the actual products before you made a decision.  On pick up night you tried it on and if any alterations where needed they could be completed then and there, or shortly after.  Most formal wear stores were small family owned operations run by tailors, seamstresses, or other experts, who added value to this service.  This had been true for many years, but slowly the wheels of change started turning and customers were feeling a bit ignored by the traditional formal wear shop.  This may sound archaic to some young people today, in the age of smart phones, "The Cloud", and instant gratification, but what some fail to see is that there is a true value in the human element and experience of this tradition.  I can clearly remember the day John Wooden came in to pick up his outfit and he brought with him a signed copy of his book personalized to me and filled with his classic wisdom.  A powerful and memorable experience.  He got to share his wisdom, and I was blessed to receive it. That experience along with many, many others are still with me today, and are part of the reason I am committed to this industry.  As the industry consolidated and many family owned stores became chains of stores and mega corporations, the need to increase profits often came at the expense of good quality service.  Inventory in stores virtually disappeared, stores became smaller, and more people were crowded in to the store competing for the attention of the formal wear expert, who ultimately was replaced by an inexperienced clerk.  This began to frustrate many customers who felt corralled like cattle thru a process that only made sense from a corporate standpoint, but not from a customer service standpoint.  I can clearly remember an incident that occurred when Adam Sandler walked in to my store in the middle of prom season expecting quality personalized service, only to find a crowd of teenagers crowding and hugging him as he tried to make it to the front counter.  I literally had to peel my female employees off of him and apologize to Mr. Sandler as I facilitated the transaction in the back office.  This indicated to me that a change was needed in order to preserve the time honored tradition of quality personalized service and attention.  In the year 2000 I started a new concept called Joe's Cyber Tux serving the city of Los Angeles, CA.  The concept was simple; you need a tux, I will come to you and you don't have to worry about traffic, crowds, or store employees clinging to your neck.  This concept worked for me for several years, and many of my fondest memories in this business come from this venture.  Unfortunately, again the wheels of change started turning.  This new change came in the form of technology.  New concepts started emerging and the technology profits being created made it easy for some intelligent pioneers to secure venture capital funding for all sorts of ideas and businesses. Some entrepreneurs singled out the formal wear industry and created a process that they hoped would eventually eliminate the store all together, by shipping the garments directly to the consumer who orders online.  So much for personalized service!  The former owner of a major clothing chain took his business nationwide by securing massive funding and going public with his company.  He failed to understand however, that this move would essentially limit his voice in what he believed was his company.  Some altercations ensued, and the man was ultimately fired from the company he had created.  Angry, humiliated, and resentful, he went on to secure funding for a new concept, a tuxedo delivery service where UPS, and FED EX replace your formal wear expert.  The man who "guaranteed" you would look good could no longer guarantee that even your delivery box was not crushed, or your garment wrinkled.  This became the deathblow to personalized quality service in the formal wear industry! Or was it?  The concept for Red Carpet Tuxedos is also simple:  We promise quality, personalized service, at prices that are better than the big Wall Street funded corporations without sacrificing the attention and service you rightfully deserve.  The idea is as old as time, but most formal wear companies simply refuse to provide it because it doesn't sit well with the accountants and Wall Street capitalists.  We don't have that problem.  Our red carpet treatment is a promise to maintain this quality personalized service, by means of attending to our customer thru our "By Appointment Only" service.  Unfortunately for us at Red Carpet Tuxedos, the wheels of change are again turning and many customers are demanding the mail to you tuxedo service.  How are we to respond?  Are we capable of ignoring the wish of the masses and stubbornly stick to our traditional way of doing things?  We have committed ourselves early on to be your innovative partners in the formal wear industry, key word being "innovative".  To keep our promise we have to stay apprised of the trends, and the direction in which the fashion world is moving, keenly listening to what our customers are demanding and adjusting our focus accordingly.  It is for this reason that we have decided to revamp Joe's Cyber Tux for a new era.
